Danbury War Memorial

The War Memorial

Danbury war memorial is situated on the corner of Elm Green at the junction with Bell Hill.  It commemorates 24 men from the local area who lost their lives in the First World War. Later Second World War victims were added.

The memorial was unveiled on 31st July 1920 by Field Marshall Sir W R Robertson and was built to the “cross of sacrifice” design.  It consists of a 7.3 metre high Portland stone Latin cross rising from an octagonal plinth on a four-stepped base.  A bronze sword of sacrifice is fixed to the south face of the cross.

The inscription reads:

“IN THANKFULNESS TO GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF DANBURY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR  MDCCCCX1V- MDCCCCXV11 “
